This page is a repository for the documents useful to the final design review (FDR) of the future M3 & M4 Nasmyth optics of the 30m telescope, which will offer upgraded performances in terms of field of view (FOV), spacing, and alignment functionalities.
This page is addressed to the participants of the FDR meeting foreseen to occur in September 2014.
Context documents
In this page I put only the technical drawings and related documents of the system proposed to be implemented to the telescope. If you want more historical background or other additional information please contact me.
Introduction
On March 17, 2014, we had at IRAM a "Final Design Review Meeting" which was rather a
final concept review meeting that leaded to the decision to contact ERIA, the mechanical engineering company who produced the technical drawings available below. The
slides presented by SL during the meeting introduce quickly the project, its goals, main historic steps, possible designs for the future M3 and M4 mirrors, and the implication on other elements in the telescope receiver cabin. The
slides presented by SN during the meeting focus more on the operations to conduct on the heterodyne side to adapt to the larger FOV optics, they were accompanied with additional
planning slides.
Meetings with ERIA
Kickoff engineering phase meeting with ERIA, of April 7, 2014. The document is in French, if you need translation and/or more info on some part please contact me; same for all the following documents. Quick summary: the main facts are the reading of the specification document (which is appended to these minutes), and the establishment of dates for the end of the study phase (mid-June) and for the installation of the hardware at the telescope (mid-September).
Meeting with ERIA, June 17. Main facts: 1
st full drawing of the M4 system; some information missing on both sides (IRAM and ERIA).
Meeting with ERIA, June 26. Main facts: focus on the M4 system to be ready for implementation in September, consolidation on some dimensions needed, identification of a free space between mirror and mount edge too short to meet safety margins, plus additional functionality to be added (blocking system for each position of M4).
Meeting with ERIA, July 09. Main facts: M4 system 95% achieved, contact with possible subcontractor for realization, delivery of Specification Document implemented with some mirrors dimensions that had to be changed to face the spacing problem, M3 system made good progress, identification of some details to be improved, request to study vibration eigen frequencies.
Meeting with ERIA, July 16. Main facts: both M3 and M4 mounts 98% achieved (only 1 screw on M3 and 1 screw on M4 to be modify to ease manipulation of the mounts), folders with technical drawing for consultation with machining company ready, complementary study for the connection to the elevation arm miss some data to be completed.
uploaded on Oct 2014: Meeting with ERIA, October 6. Main facts: M4 mount validated, OK for fabricationplan; M3 mount validated except for 1 distance to be checked at the telescope; need to change the elevation arm; specifications for NIKA2 M5 and M6 delivered, ask for a quotation to make the design of the mounts.
Additional IRAM documents produced during ERIA study
Measure of vibrations in the receiver cabin at the place where the future M3 and M4 mounts will be attached. The measures were done by Juan Peņalver and Santiago Navarro in June 2014.
Zemax simulation layout showing the maximum size possible of the M3-M4 mirrors concerving a Nasmyth system, and a FOV of 7.0 arc minutes diameter which fit in this future M3-M4 system. Each color corresponds to a beam: blue is at the center (= line of sight = optical axis), the other colors point various positions on the 7' FOV circle. These sizes and position of mirrors are the final ones retain for the project and used in all the following documents.
The encircled energy diagram on M4, shows the energy integrated in circles centered on each beam as a function of the circle radius; the geometric distribution of the rays corresponds to the steep slope, the effects of diffraction are included and clearly visible with the gentle slope beyond the steep slope.
Calculation sheet of the FOV effectively available for the current (old) M3-M4 system and the upgraded (future) M3-M4 system, depending on various criteria related to the uses of the incoming beams (edge taper horns with beam waist criteria, bare pixels of field arrays with encircled energy criteria, etc.).
Main documents
Final specifications and global view of the future M3 and M4
Completed specifications: Sections 1 to 5 are identical to the specification document from the kickoff meeting, the additional section 6 is an addendum containing information that changed or appeared to be missing during ERIA study; in particular the final sizes and positions of the mirrors.
General view of the proposed M3 and M4 system in the receiver cabin (this document was sent by ERIA to confirm the exact position of the metallic tube on the ceiling to which the M3 mount will be attached).
Proposed design of the M3 and M4 mirrors (4 pdf files binded together, mirrors only, without mounts).
The M4 mount
3D drawings presenting the proposed M4 system in the cabin as of mid-June. At this date the design was 90% complete. It was accompanied with a
study of deformation of the mirror under its own weight.
Updated and final 3D drawings of the M4 mount:
mount with mirror for manual operation,
mount without mirror,
mount with mirror for motorized operation.
Implantation of M4 in the cabin with more details on the dimensions.
The 3 indexed positions that will be used for the future M4 system.
