Chris Wilson -- Pipeline I haven't done much for my subsystem this month. I've had a bit of email
contact with Tim Cornwell, who took over for Athol Kemball, and have read
some documentation he pointed me to on the pipeline part of the e2e
project. There is some more stuff I was going to read but I haven't been
able to get to it.
I'm a bit concerned that I haven't heard anything or been asked to do
anything for the internal PDR, which is coming up in four weeks. Are the
other subsystems in a similar situation? I'm a bit worried I'll be
wasting my time going all the way to Garching for a week. It's important
that as much material as possible be circulated before the Garching
meetings. I haven't even seen anything like an agenda yet! I'd be
interested to know how the other subsystems are doing.
John Richer -- Telescope Calibration This month I have attended only the normal telecon of the group. At the
moment, the work is mainly architectural and does not involve refinement of
the Requirements document; this is expected to become more important next
year. One issue that did arise at the Science IPT was the availability of
calibration software for the ATF test interferometer, in 2004. It was asked
if anything would be available or not, and what the fallback options might
be.
Steve Scott -- Correlator
Discussions with Jim Pisano on the following topics:
Nomenclature for correlator data durations (stick with SSR Requirements
doc definitions - these will work fine)
Application of the antenna based WVR corrections to the baseline based
data.
Would an astronomer ever want to turn off the fine delay quantization
correction? Don't think so - doesn't need to be a program option.
Proper formulas for the quantization correction for the ALMA correlator
with the 3-bit, 8-level digitization in the digitizers followed by a 2-bit,
4-level digitizer in the FIR filter. Don't have a clue. Suggested using the
2-bit 4-level correction for now, hidden behind an interface that will allow
replacement in the future when a better algorithm is known. Anybody know if
there is a source for this?
Leonardo Testi -- Observing Program Preparation Most of the activity of the subsystem has been focused in
developing and testing on the prototype technical design
concepts.
Mel Wright -- Scheduling Allen & I have had several useful email exchanges, and a
productive telephone meeting in the last month. Allen has made a
good analysis of the scheduling requirements and the draft design
document contains a nice discussion and is essentially complete.
Francois Viallefond -- Archive I have spent some time with Andreas on Thursday Nov 7 at ESO and
he described to me what he has with his group in mind for the
ALMA archive. At this stage the design is very abstract. There
will be the need to discuss soon about the data model with its
implications. I had also a presentation of NGAST.
Jeff Mangum -- Control Nothing to report on the subsystem scientist issue. I have been
attending the Computing IPT meetings, but they are busy with ATF
and IDR.
Peter Schilke -- Data Reduction User Interface no report
Steve Myers -- Off-Line Analysis no report
Status of memo 11 (R. Lucas)
This is the last occasion to correct minor editing mistakes -
Please check the document and report errors to R. Lucas (by end f
the week).
Steve Myers mentions that they have a new version of EVLA
Science Requirements and proposes to send us the new version for
reference.
Changes in Pipeline and Off-Line Subsystems
(Brian Glendenning)
Tim Cornwell has replaced A. Kemball as Pipeline Subsystem
lead, and Kumar Golap as Off-Line Subsystem lead. Due his numerous
tasks Tim Cornwell can only take an interim lead till the spring PDR
at the latest. It is hoped that Kumar can take this position
permanently.
Status of AIPS++ audit (Steve Myers/Brian Glendenning)
Steve can work on it next week, summarizing the comments, and
should send a version for comments inside the SSR by the end of next
week. Less formal comments from AIPS++ may be included at this later
stage.
Steve gave also information on his new tasks as AIPS++ Project
Scientist and on the NRAO planned technical review of AIPS++ in
January. Due to his new tasks he will not be able to act as the
Off-Line Data Reduction Subsystem Scientist. He however expresses
his wish to stay in close contact with the SSR activities.
For the benchmarking it would be better is the SSR prepares
benchmark data sets, as the AIPS++ team will suffer a manpower
problem in the next weeks/months.
Status of AIPS++/IRAM test (R. Lucas)
There is a currently a stability problem when attempting to
re-create the 1mm continuum image of the Phase I data set;
The 13CO line image at 1mm is of poorer dynamic range when
compared to the image calibrated using IRAM software (and imaged
with AIPS++).
The AIPS++ team is working on these problems (however people on
both sides are also busy preparing the IDR documents ...)
A visit by Tim Cornwell and Kumar Golap is planned for the
first week of December to progress on the test.
Agenda of face to face meeting (R. Lucas,
B. Glendenning)
The draft agenda has been circulated. The deadline for
submission of design documents by the subsystems is Nov 15th. SSR
members will be asked to contribute as reviewers by sending in
comments in the weeks before the IDR. On each Subsystem both the
Substystem Scientist and another reviewer will be required to send
in comments (though comments from all will naturally be welcomed on
all subsystem documents). Replies by the authors will be also
provided before the review and the discussion will be focused on the
controversial issues.
We will have a dedicated SSR meeting on the Monday morning
(Agenda suggestions are welcome) and a session to elaborate our
global conclusions on Thursday.
Date of next phone meeting
The hone meeting should be skipped next month as we should be in Garching.
According to the schedule the following one will be on:
2003, January 15th 15:00 UT to avoid conflict with the ASAC
meeting.
