A block booking rate of $115/night for a single room and $135/night for a double room will be given to meeting participants. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD MAKE HOTEL RESERVATIONS DIRECTLY WITH THE HOTEL. When reserving, please refer to the "ALMA Scientific Software Working group" block booking in order to receive the special rate. [However, if you are planning to arrive earlier than Sunday night (July 15), you may have to invoke the name "SKA Meeting" as well, since the Square Kilometer Array Conference has currently reserved a massive block booking for the previous week. This block booking was also made by the Radio Astronomy Lab, and is big enough to accommodate ALMA meeting participants who are planning early arrivals in Berkeley] All rooms must be guaranteed in advance, by a major credit card, advance deposit of first night's room and tax or by established credit account. RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY JUNE 30, 2001 IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE DISCOUNTED RATE! After the cut-off date, the Hotel Durant will continue to accept reservations on a space available, rate available basis. Overnight parking for hotel guests is subject to a $7 per vehicle, per night charge. The Hotel Durant is within easy walking distance of many restaurants and shops. You can obtain a campus area map from the main desk. THE BANCROFT HOTEL 2680 Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA 94704 510-549-1000 The Bancroft Hotel, very small and charming, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1928 as a private clubhouse by the College Women's Club, a group of Panhellenic women. The Square Kilometer Array meeting will be held here July 9-12. The hotel is located on the southern perimeter of campus near the art museum, (1 block from the Hotel Durant) and also just a few minutes walk to Campbell Hall where the ALMA-SSWG meeting will take place. There is a small parking lot adjacent to the hotel. A block booking rate of $99/night for a single room will be given to meeting participants. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD MAKE HOTEL RESERVATIONS DIRECTLY WITH THE HOTEL. There is no cut off date for reserving a room, but ASAP would be best! When reserving, please refer to the "ALMA - SSWG" block booking in order to receive the special rate. [The Bancroft is fully booked up during the weekend prior to the meeting, so if you are planning to arrive earlier than Sunday night, it may be better to book at the Durant] The MEN'S FACULTY CLUB is currently unavailable during the week of the meeting. The WOMEN'S FACULTY CLUB (hotel facilities are for both men and women) will be closed for repairs during the first week of July, and although they hope to re-open on the 8th, they are currently accepting reservations for the 16th and beyond. They're making an assessment of repairs needed and will soon be able to determine exactly when they plan to re-open...If you are interested in staying at the Women's Faculty Club here on campus, contact kutulas@astro.berkeley.edu for an update (and to make reservations if it becomes available for such). Stern Hall, the Women's Dorm up the hill, rents rooms out over the summer for $50/night for a single and $64/night for a double, but these are rooms without private bathrooms. It's a nice place though as far as dorms go - old with lots of wood and up on the hill near the Greek theater. A lot of younger SKA attendees are planning to stay there. Or you can try "Google" search for "hotels in berkeley california" ! TRANSPORTATION - AIRPORTS (SAN FRANCISCO AND OAKLAND) TO HOTEL: Neither the Hotel Durant or the Bancroft Hotel have a shuttle system for airport to hotel travel. If you are flying into either airport - San Francisco or Oakland - and wish to avoid taxis, you can take the BayPorter Express for $19. The shuttle has meeting points at both the San Francisco and Oakland airports outside each terminal. A boarding coordinator is at each shuttle stop, and the shuttle stops frequently . You must call 415/467-1800 to make a reservation. If you are traveling lightly and don't mind some inconvenience, travel by BART train is cheaper. There is a BART station within walking distance of both hotels (about 6 blocks). You have to take a shuttle bus between either airport and the nearest BART station.
