The Weeds project started on mid-2009 at Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Grenoble (now known as Institut de Planétologie et d'Astrophysique de Grenoble). Soon after Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique started to support its development.

Weeds relies on PyGILDAS, a Python binding for GILDAS developed by Sébastien Bardeau, Jérôme Pety, Emmanuel Reynier (Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique) and Stéphane Guilloteau (Observatoire de Bordeaux).
